It’s never the flamey drama teacher; it’s always the militaristic Phys Ed shit-head. We were made to swim naked at YMCA swim lessons. Even at 8 i knew it was creepy & that they had murky motivations. They’d examine us closely on our way into the pool, ostensibly to judge whether we had sufficiently showered.
There was also an 8th grade basketball coach named William Garvey who punished errant players by paddling their bare asses, while cupping their genitalia with his free hand on the pretext of protecting them from injury. (I heard about this in advance, and chose never to play organized sports.) This very same gentleman rose through the ranks of Erie PA Catholic education to become president of Mercyhurst college – total pillar of the community – until a sex scandal finally forced him to resign a couple years ago at the age of 64.
